Three years after being removed from the Star Wars spin-off, the former MMA fighter faces a legal battle in response to her controversial dismissal, triggered by a social media post comparing the Holocaust to the political climate in the United States.
Carano faced severe criticism in February 2021 following a social media post. The content compared the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust to hostility against people for their political views in the USA.
The backlash was immediate, with the hashtag #fireginacarano gaining momentum online, culminating in her dismissal by Lucasfilm, which described her posts as “abominable and unacceptable”.
On Wednesday morning, Carano announced the lawsuit through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. In her defense, she questioned the accusations of racism, arguing that her posts were misinterpreted and questioning the merit of the accusations.
Carano’s lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm, and Huckleberry Industries accuses discrimination based on gender and political opinions. It starts with the phrase “Not long ago, in a galaxy not so far away”, and argues that Disney promotes an orthodoxy in thought and discourse, penalizing those who do not conform.
Carano seeks reinstatement in her previous position, in addition to significant financial compensation, including for emotional damages and legal costs.
The lawsuit highlights an alleged double standard of Disney and Lucasfilm, citing social media posts of co-stars such as Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill, who also made controversial political statements but did not face the same consequences. This comparison aims to demonstrate inconsistency in the company’s policy application.
Elon Musk’s Support for Carano’s Case
Elon Musk, owner of X and a defender of free speech, is financing Carano’s legal action. Musk had expressed interest in supporting individuals dismissed for exercising their freedom of speech on the platform. X Corp, through Joe Benarroch, confirmed financial support for Carano’s case, emphasizing their commitment to freedom of expression.
